Chicago Public Library Summer Program Illustrations

I was commissioned to develop the concept direction and create a series of illustrations for the Chicago Public Library’s summer programming. These visuals were showcased in city-wide advertising and incorporated into materials across 81 library branches. Additionally, I led children's summer workshops at six libraries, introducing a hands-on learning element to the experience.

Creative Brief

I was asked to create a series of illustrations commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Chicago Public Library. The goal was to craft visuals that not only celebrate this milestone but also spark enthusiasm for libraries, literacy, and learning. Each illustration aims to capture the vibrant and festive atmosphere of summertime in Chicago, drawing inspiration from lively block parties as well as the rich food scene, and encouraging an audience of all ages to participate in the season's programming.

Selected concept: "Book stack explosion”

This concept draws inspiration from stacks of colorful books, arranged to ascend in an uplifting, dynamic manner. Each "level" bursts with celebratory elements and activities, mimicking the movement of confetti poppers to add a festive and lively dimension to the design.

Program Materials

Illustrations that build off the upward, celebratory direction of the main concept were created for various program materials including activity books, guides, and coloring pages, activity boards, and workshops. Materials were distributed across 81 library branches in the Chicago area.

Main Activity Guide

The cover design for the main activity guide captures historical and popular elements of the Chicago Public Library system.

Spot illustrations throughout the various printed and online materials feature iconic Chicago landmarks, details about the history and branches of the Chicago Public Library, summer activities, and visual clues to popular children's literature titles.

The inside panel of the main activity guide includes a maze where the path subtly forms the number "150" as children navigate their way to the end.

Teen Activity Board

Custom lettered and illustrated activity prompts for teens were displayed on posters and handouts in libraries.

Young Children’s Activity Guide

The main artwork was also simplified and adapted for younger audiences with the Little Activity Guide.

Spot illustrations feature iconic Chicago landmarks, public libraries, and summer imagery.

T-shirt design

The anniversary t-shirt was distributed among library staff on the 150th anniversary and patrons who participated in the reading program.

Coloring pages

Coloring pages were distributed at all libraries.

City-wide promotion

The program was promoted through city-wide advertisements, including billboards, digital displays, signage in the Chicago Transit Authority, and more.
